How about learning steps to get that flawless makeup look? Well, your prayers have been answered! I want to share with you some of the amazing beauty gurus that you can trust to help you in your search for the items you need from your favorite brands. The Youtube beauty community is one of the largest there is. With thousands of people joining daily to create and share videos about what they love the most, there is something for everyone. You can find what they call beauty “Gurus” from all over the world on the site. Being a huge lover and subscriber of Youtube, I thought it was my duty as a beauty editor to share the amazing and talented people that I have come across. She is the first of the beauty channels that I came across when I became addicted to Youtube.
Cora aka vintageortacky is one of my all time favorite personalities on Youtube. Her famous tag line in the banner above says it all. With an incredible skill and talent, she provides her viewers with gorgeous makeup tutorials, product reviews, and most of all: A humble confidence that lets them know how important they are to her. She is a genuine person who believes in what she says and does. She conveys this is in her own unique charm that is both endearing and very entertaining. Her videos are exactly what you look for: informative, educational and most of all: FUN! I was fortunate enough to have her take time out of her schedule to chat with me and I can honestly say that I was so excited to talk to her and learn about what truly motivates her creativity. By the end of the conversation, I felt like I had just be talking to one of my best friends. That is how real she is. So if you aren’t reading her fabulous blog: www.vintageortacky.com, watching her channel: www.youtube.com/vintageortacky or following her faebook or twitter, you must. I know you will be glad you did. Here is my one on one with Cora herself:
CS – What’s your background?
VOT – I am a mix of Scottish, Irish, Welsh and German and actually have some Seminole and Cherokee Native American.
I grew up moving around different areas of California.
CS – How did you get into makeup?
VOT – First and foremost – My mom was an Avon lady, and I had access to the catalogs, etc. I would devour catalog. I loved that they would describe everything about the products. My grandmother always used the BEST cosmetics. That gave me a taste for higher quality makeup. As a teenager I was a tomboy. The first time I went to a MAC counter, my friend wanted to buy a lip gloss and I couldn’t believe that she would pay $14.00 for a lip gloss. I then watched the MAC employees and I became obsessed with the makeup artist! When I saw their love of makeup and beauty, I was sold after that. Working at a Costco at the time, my co workers didn’t wear makeup, but that was my own outlet. I would save money to buy makeup every chance I could.
When discussing the term “Guru”, Cora gave me her thoughts:
VOT – Guru is a very inappropriate term. I prefer makeup vlogger.
CS – Did you study to be a makeup artist only; do you do hair as well? Your hair looks well taken care of all the time.
VOT – Since I was about 9 years old, I wanted to do hair. My mom had a fabulous stylist and it was my dream to do that my whole life. I had a wrist injury when working at Costco, which affected me being able to have a career in hair. In college, I actually studied interior design.
CS – What has YT done for you personally and professionally?
VOT – Personally – Has helped me discovered how much I love teaching and helping people. Being on YT has helped me be more confident. You can see the change throughout the videos if you look back at my old videos.
Professionally – It has helped me to an extent, especially since I became a makeup artist. It’s made me push myself to do things I normally I wouldn’t do.
CS – What was your first thoughts/goals when you started your channel?
VOT – I have had my channel for over four years now! I didn’t really have many goals when starting it. The community was so much smaller and I really wanted to do videos for fun and my own pleasure. It was for the fun of it.
CS – What are thoughts/polices with companies/products?
VOT – I was never aware of starting channels for the goal of getting products. Channels should be started for the love of your goal (making videos).
CS – What are your intentions for your reviews?
VOT – My viewers are my #1 priority. I thoroughly review a company before considering them for a product review. I feel very strongly about the line being cruelty free as well. If it is not something that you believe in it, you shouldn’t be talking about it.
CS – You have been branching into fashion videos now, partnering with Torrid and doing OOTD (Outfit of the Day). Would you ever consider going in the plus size fashion industry? Becoming a plus size model?
VOT – I think every girl who reads fashion magazines, wants to be a part of it and be a model, etc. I was discussing with my mom how much I love doing these fashion videos. They have reawakened something within my self that I haven’t felt for a long time.
CS – I remember hearing in one of your videos that you used to work at Sephora, was that a good training ground for you?
VOT – Sephora was like a stepping stone for me. It’s kind of like how you can be a makeup artist and work at home depot. Working there was like boot camp. It was a good starting point. It gave me a confidence to pursue makeup artistry.
CS – So I realize that MAC was your first brand and you worked with them as a makeup artist. What are your tops brands:
VOT – MAC, Inglot, Milani, Wet ‘n Wild, Revlon
CS – What are your other hobbies besides your blog, YT and of course all things beauty?
TV, books, music? Some of your favs?
VOT – TV: Glee, How I met your mother, Smash, Big Bang Theory
BOOK: I’m a Harry Potter nerd / The girl with the dragon tattoo series
MUSIC: At the moment: Loving Adele, The Killers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, I love the song: Someone that I used to know by Gotye
CS – What are your top three beauty dos that you can share with our readers? What are your top don’ts?
VOT – Do’s:
A: Always use sunscreen
B: Thoroughly cleanse your skin and keep your beauty tools as clean as possible to protect your skin. This will keep your skin healthy and your makeup looking flawless.
C: Be true to yourself, take your time to find out what colors and shades work for you and own it!
Don’ts /Beauty Tips:
A: TIP – Match the thickness of your eyeliner to the scale of your eye. If you have larger eyes, and more eyelid space, you want to have a thicker line to balance it out. If you have a smaller eye with less lid space, go with less eyeliner to create the illusion of a larger lid.
B: TIP – Apply concealer with a flat brush and blend it out with a fluffy brush. The flat will give you precise placement and the fluffy brush with blur the line.
C: Don’t – Don’t do your eye makeup after your foundation because you will touch your face and ruin your foundation and also you can get a lot of fallout from doing your eye makeup and have to redo your foundation.
CS- If you were stranded on a desert island, what are the 3 things you couldn’t live without?
VOT – A: Sunscreen
B: Mascara that won’t come off until you remove it with warm water.
C: Lip Balm
CS – Is there anything you would like to share with our readers? Thoughts??
VOT – Be true to yourself. Don’t do anything because everyone else is; be true to your own style and what works for you.
