I know exactly what you thought when you saw the “Dallas” logo on this article. Wasn’t that show from like, a million years ago? (Actually, the show started 34 years ago and ended 21 years ago.) How do I know you thought this? Because I thought the same thing when I found out that TNT was going to be doing a “continuation” of the infamous night soap opera this summer. If you’re my age, you’re probably scratching your head about why this return is such a big deal. But have no worries – this little crash course about all things “Dallas” will have you ready for the premier in no time. Are you ready for the past, present and future drama of the Ewing family?
When I was younger, I remember my parents talking about the show that “started it all” when it came to night dramas on television. Now, mind you, I have always been a huge soap opera fan. When I was a budding soap opera fan, it was either all about the classics (General Hospital or Days of Our Lives) or the short lived but still awesome (Passions) for me after school. And what was the first magazine I ever subscribed to in high school? You guessed it – Soap Opera Digest. Anyway, they would always talk about one of the most infamous lines in television history – “Who shot J.R?” And all I can remember thinking was Who the hell is J.R? So needless to say, when I heard that “Dallas” (the root of the infamous “Who Shot J.R?” line) was coming back to television – I was nothing short of intrigued.
A whirlwind of a drama set in Texas and centered around the infamous (fictional) Ewing family that found their fortune with the oil business – Dallas came to the small screen in 1978 and stayed for thirteen consecutive seasons. The show depicted the life, loves and losses of the Ewing family as it grew to span a few more generations. The Ewing family brought nothing but drama, drama, DRAMA to the soap opera scene every Friday night. Dallas defined what it takes to make a show memorable- scandal. Some notable names that played on the infamous show include: Larry Hagman (who IS the infamous ‘J.R’), Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray and Jim Davis.
TNT has made it very clear from the start that the return of Dallas is a continuation of the popular show. The new season finds us 15plus years after the last episode. This time, it’s the new generations (John Ross Ewing III – portrayed by Josh Henderson and Christopher Ewing portrayed by Jesse Metcalfe. Yes, the Jesse Metcalfe.) that are taking center stage with the help of the elders of their family. Lucky for us – we’ll be seeing some familiar faces such as Larry Hagman, Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy return.
You’ll be able to find the new season of Dallas exclusively on TNT. But as of yet – the release date is unknown except for that it will return this summer. You can find out more about the return of Dallas on Tnt.com/Dallas. You can also catch up on the thirteen steamy seasons on Netflix. PS – who do you think will be the victim in the updated version of “Who Shot J.R?”
