Lady Gaga brings Adele Into Her Weight Defense

We all know that the press can be difficult in the industry. They are constantly commenting on an artist’s looks, personal taste and fashion sense. I cannot even imagine what it would be like to have the press watching your every move all the time. I did come across reading something today that truly took my beliefs to an all time high. It is no secret that Lady Gaga has been facing a lot of backlash for gaining about 25-30 pounds. I think in my opinion that it is ridiculous to the extent of posting pictures of her all over the web and making it so much bigger than it is. She is an icon for several types of fans, young and old. She is a great singer/performer and has done a lot to support several communities as well as use her music and fame as a platform for people to love themselves for who they are. The one thing that I find ridiculous is that in a recent interview where she was questioned again about her weight gain, she had the nerve to bash another female artist and question why no one says anything her when she is “bigger”. She of course was talking about Adele, the eight-time grammy award winning singer that happens to be plus size. Adele is known as an amazing songstress and writer with lyrics that are truly legendary. Gaga has been very open recently about her battle with bulimia and anorexia and stated: “I just thought, ‘This is f*cking ridiculous.’ I mean, what kind of example is that to a young girl sitting at home? I thought, ‘well I don’t really care if they think I’m fat, because, quite honestly, I did gain about 30 pounds.'” she said. This was in response to the news about some unflattering photos of her that have been going around the web. She also said that she didn’t care, and then lashed out after being reported on the news. The 26 year old singer/performer asked a question: “Adele is bigger than me, how come nobody says anything about it? She’s so wonderful and I think her confidence is something I have to match. She has set the bar very high for a lot of woman. I need to be a confident woman and just say politically active things when I can that are helpful to young people,” she told Stylist. In this editor’s opinion, there is no reason to bring anyone else into it. Why would you bring down another female singer as being bigger. Even though she compliments her confidence, I believe this is completely wrong. Don’t women have enough trouble trying to get ahead in the music business without other female singers putting them down to defend themselves? Adele has in turn faced her own problems with people talking about her weight. She was criticized by fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld who called her “fat” and then he apologized in a statement. Adele has only responded by saying: “I’ve never wanted to look like models on the cover of magazines,” the then 23-year-old told People. “I represent the majority of women and I’m very proud of that.”  I am not saying that Gaga owes anyone anything and the press have no excuse for scrutinizing her or any celeb for gaining weight, but her fame has been based partly on her body and showing it off as well as her musical talent. She has been famous for her skimpy outfits and outrageous costumes. Adele is a totally different kind of performer. There is absolutely no excuse to ever bring another person in defense of your own issues. I am sure this topic will be quite the topic over the next few days. My point is that as women, we have it hard enough trying to love who we are and work hard to get ahead. Let’s rise above and use fame in a more positive way. What are your thoughts about Gaga’s statements?
