-Las Vegas, Nevada
Last night was surely an evening full of surprises. The 2015 Miss Universe Pageant returned to the fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada for the live taping of the event on FOX. The broadcast took place at the Axis Theater located smack dab in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip inside of Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino. I had no idea the event was in town and received an invite last minute (and I mean VERY last minute) to attend the pageant. So, like the fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants woman that I am, I decided, why not. And then my day got very interesting…
I rushed through the hectic weekend traffic on the strip to valet my car at The Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino located across the street from Planet Hollywood, figuring that the parking garages at PH would be similar to a scene out of a horror movie. Dashed over the pedestrian bridge connecting The Cosmo to Planet Hollywood crossing over Las Vegas BLVD. Upon arrival the staff walk you through the metal detectors and greet you with a brisk pat down before allowing you to enter the theater.
My seats we’re prime real estate in seeing all the action happen live, floor level stage right. I arrived late so the taping had already started. The energy from the crowd was insane. Legions of fans came out with everything from signs and flags to full costume gear and noise makers representing the countries of their favorite contestant. As each woman took the stage, Steve Harvey would announce them and you could automatically tell who had alot of fans there to support. From the very beginning the off camera announcer stated that if they had to choose the winner of the pageant by crowd participation, Philippines would win. The roar of the crowd was something reminiscent to my teeny bopper Backstreet Boys obsessed days.
The swimsuit competition was up next and all of the contestants fled the stage to go backstage and get ready for the next segment. A few of the performances were previously recorded like Nick Jonas was not there, and John Legend. They played one of these while the ladies went to change. The woman brought their A game during the swimsuit competition ! Hair, flair and attitude oozed from the stage as the beauties strutted their stuff on the cat walk. This part of the competition really showed a lot more than skin, these ladies personalities shined through during this part of the show.
Once it got down to the final three. My heart rate rose a few beats. They announced Miss USA, Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines and the crowd went wild. Steve Harvey had to ask the ladies one last question “Why should they be Miss Universe” and the same crowd that was rivaling a football game became eerily quite as the ladies spoke. (Sidenote: I loved that they covered their ears so they couldn’t get any ideas).
Finally what we have all been waiting for, Steve gets back on the mic and states that the voting count has been completed and the over 10 million voters and panel have chosen the new Miss Universe. He starts off by announcing that Miss USA was the 2nd runner up. Next there was a pause as Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines stood face to face waiting to hear their fate. Harvey announces to the audience and to the world live that Miss Colombia is crowned Miss Universe 2015. The cheers and celebration from the audience exploded. Miss Colombia even reached down into the audience to grab a little Colombian flag to wave as part of her celebration of winning this for her country.
And then the unthinkable happened…
Steve Harvey returns to the mic and says “A mistake has been made.” Miss Colombia is the runner up, which means Miss Philippians is the 2015 Miss Universe winner. When Harvey announced this, there was an awkwardly long pause before any movement was made on stage. That is when Miss Universe 2014 returned to the stage to dethrone Miss Colombia of her crown and sash. The energy quickly shifted to one of confusion to anger among the remaining audience. Miss Philippians face said it all, it was a shock to everyone. People started yelling and booing, you heard a lot of WTF , Steve messed up big time, and I know they aren’t bringing him back next year.
Miss Colombia gracefully allowed Miss Universe to crown Pia as the new Miss Universe for 2015. In my personal experience I feel absolutely heartbroken for Miss Colombia. A lot of the audience, Including myself were on our way out of the theater concluding the broadcast trying to beat the human traffic as well as the actual traffic. Even with this little fudge up Miss Universe and Steve Harvey put on a great show. I loved everything from the dresses, learning more about the girls through their bio clips and the live performances. I really really REALLY loved the filters on snapchat that included the Miss Universe Crown as well as other catch phrases for the pageant.
I snapped a few shots on my personal phone and the video posted also came from my phone. I ran into radio personality and host Lauren Cakes in the audience and snapped a few pictures with her as well. I hope everyone one enjoyed FOX live broadcast of the event as much as I did being there in person. And even with the little sour taste in my mouth about the mix up, live tv is live tv and stuff happens. Toodles Lovies !
