When first talking to celebrity stylist and beauty director Billy Lowe, I learn a little about his background, upbringing, and the general process of events that took him into the beauty industry. It is from this conversation that I can derive why he became a professional stylist. With a creative and educational background, he has a gift for what he does. Billy is extremely knowledgeable and true to his craft. He has a love of hair and beauty that is truly impressive. His infamous slogan, “Everyday is a good hair day” gives you the idea of his positive energy and love of beauty.
Celebrities that have experienced his work include Ellen Degeneres (Ellen’s personal stylist for season 3 of her daytime talk show), Fantasia Barrino, Catherine McPhee, Debra Messing, Lance Bass, Carson Kressley, the cast of Desperate Housewives, the cast of Queer as Folk, MGM legend Gloria DeHaven, the Dave Matthews Band, and yes, even Elvira. With our summer issue launching, I was inclined to get his expert opinion on the do’s and don’ts for the season so we too can look like stars.
Let’s talk HAIR!
BILLY: The biggest hair tip that I have is that you trust your salon professional. It is common to self prescribe and do it at home. You want to make sure to use products that are appropriate for your hair type. Your stylist knows your hair and skin type and can find the product and shade that’s right for you. You must always remember that what you see on the box has the correct lighting and photography to make it look that way.
What is the most important beauty trick you can give for the summer?
BILLY: Day to evening Look: A classic ponytail will get you from a day at the park to an evening on Park Avenue. It’s a two minute trick; a lower ponytail at the nape of the neck is a little more elegant. Wrap some hair around the rubber band and secure it with a bobby pin for a sleek look. Leave hair around the face for facial framing, it gives a subtle, classy look.
What are your thoughts on the perfect summer makeup look?
BILLY: For me, it is something that is very fresh and understated. A subtle eye with a subtle lip is all that is needed. Burt’s Bees shimmer lip balms are a favorite of mine that have a little bit of color and sparkle. For an evening look, lining the lips after applying gloss makes the lips look soft but bold. Exfoliate your skin everyday to keep a fresh, beautiful and healthy glow for summer. Consult your beauty skincare professional for the appropriate regimen for your skin type.
What advice can you give for those with oily, combination and dry skin types during the warmer climates?
BILLY: Oily- Keep oil blotting papers with you, they pull oil away from the skin. Do not pack on powder as it clogs pores. Always use a translucent powder for touch ups, colored powder mixes with oil and can look cakey. It is perfect for all skin tones and types. I like using cotton balls for application, they are hygienic and disposable. Keep a zip lock bag of cotton balls in your purse. When using brushes; make sure to clean them regularly.
Combination- Monitor when your skin is uncomfortable. Be aware of your location, environment and climate. For example, living in Palm Springs is a dry environment and can make skin dehydrated as opposed to someone living in Miami where it is very humid and skin becomes oilier.
Dry- The skin is a fine balance of oil and water. Do not overdo on moisturizer. The key is to exfoliate and balance moisture. Trust your skin care expert and make sure you are using products that are right for you. Drink lots of water and stay hydrated.
BILLY: My favorite products for summer are Gloss and Toss Hair Serum by Billy Lowe because it’s perfect for all hair types. It eliminates frizz, tames flyaway’s and makes curls look shiny and healthy. Hairspray is always a girl’s best friend for summertime and one of my favorite beauty products for the season. A Summertime skin care favorite is the Erno Laszlo skincare line. Burt’s Bees lip balms are perfect for hydrating and protecting lips and they also give that hint of color.
What would be the number one item in your beach beauty bag?
BILLY: My number one item for my beach bag would of course be Sunscreen!!! You always want to protect the skin.
What are you Top 3 beauty must haves for Beauty on the go?
BILLY: Top 3 beauty on the go products are: Hairspray Mascara Lip gloss. It’s all a girl needs to look her best this season.
What is your number one hair don’t?
BILLY: Don’t do it yourself at home. There is so much to color formulation, so it is important to work with your salon professional.
