Every reality show has that one stand out star. The person everyone can relate to, the one who says it like they mean it but has a heart of gold. On the hit reality show Mary Mary, which gives viewers a peak into the lives of Grammy winning gospel singers Erica and Tina, that star is Thomasina Atkins. Friends and family affectionately call her “GooGoo” a nickname she’s had since she was younger. On the show, GooGoo was introduced to the world as one of Erica and Tina’s younger sisters but more importantly, she is known as the diva behind their amazing wardrobe. Curvy Magazine had the pleasure of talking with GooGoo about how she became a celebrity stylist, how the show has impacted her career and what you can find in her closet.
How did you get into the fashion industry? What made you want to become a stylist?
I don’t ever remember saying I wanted to be a stylist when I got older. I always had an interest in clothes. Growing up as a plus size child there were so many things I couldn’t wear. I would have all these ideas for clothes that could fit my body so I would draw pictures of the clothes and get friends of mine to make them. I didn’t even know what a stylist was at the time but people admired my personal style. I had done a few things with my sisters [Mary Mary] and because I also have a singing background I knew a lot of people in the industry but I still had to prove myself as a stylist.
It’s easy to style yourself but how do you know what will look good on someone else? Does it just come naturally to you?
It comes with experience. There’s certain staple things that will work for certain body types. Example, with an hourglass shape if you put them in something fitted you’ll win. Right from jump you should be familiar with body types; that’s basic. I try and get familiarized with my clients too like by looking at pictures of them.
Did you ever think appearing on Mary Mary would lead to so much success?
I don’t really have a lot more clients that I did before the show, it just brought awareness to me and my brand and it’s given me a platform. I’m very grateful for the platform because it makes me more visible and people are able to see me in a different light, not just as a stylist. It has also made me more visible to my fans.
On the show you are often wearing many hats all at once (stylist, sister, girlfriend and at one point one of the sister’s wedding planner). How do successfully juggle everything?
Prayer. I don’t go into it knowing that I’m going to conquer it I just pray for every step of the way. That’s all I do is pray because I know God won’t put more on you than you can bear. I have to take things day by day because looking at the big picture is overwhelming.
Has it sunken in that people call you a celebrity?
I’ve heard celebrity a couple times. It’s just weird to me; it feels like they’re not talking to me. I feel like I’m just popular versus being a celebrity.
What’s the best thing about your job as a stylist?
Making ladies feel beautiful. I like to see people happy and feel good. Looks are a big deal to women and I like to have my hand in that and to be able to say I was able to help with that.
I know we’re going to see a whole lot more of GooGoo. What’s next for you?
It’s not my ambition to always run around as much as I do. I would like to pullback, not necessarily on styling, but on the all the ripping and running. I want to have teams of people to help me out and oversee as opposed to me doing everything by myself.
Now I want to switch gears a little bit and talk about trends and your personal style. What are some pieces every closet needs?
Every closet needs a blazer, a pair of high waisted pants, a pencil skirt and a versatile skinny jean. Those are some items that are pretty versatile and current and you can play around with them. If you have these items and a plethora of shoes and blouses you can play around with them and get a lot of good looks.
What’s your favorite trend this season?
I don’t think I have a favorite trend; I’m all over place. It’s winter so I love a dope jacket. A nice mini trench with crazy leggings or skinny jeans is easy and comfortable.
Ok so no favorite trend. What would we find in your closet?
You would find some of everything. I have a lot of color. A lot of people in this industry tend to have a lot of black and grey but that’s not my personality. I also have a lot of form fitting pieces.
