Kim Coles is elated that Bounce TV chose her to get it started. They needed someone seasoned and strong to start season three off right with a bang – and she fit the bill.
During a full schedule of live performances, media interviews, guest co-hosting, blog and social media updating, jokingly we asked Kim Cole when she had the time to ever record a one-hour special in her constantly moving schedule. Little did we know that the luvable “Synchaire” character from Yvette Lee Bowsers’ ground-breaking “Living Single” or a part of the ensemble from Keenan Ivory Wayans’ brainchild ‘In Living Color – would be celebrating thirty years in the business of funny. Woo Woo Woo.
CURVY: How long have you been in the business?
Kim Coles: Believe it or not, I’ve been doing this for 30 plus years. People remember me as “Synchaire” but I really started out as a stand up comic even before I was on “In Living Color.” I, proudly started and live my live as a stand up comedienne.
CURVY: Which comedians are you enjoying now?
KC: I’m laughing to Kevin Hart, Mike Epps, Marina Franklin, George Collins, Joan Rivers, I can go on and on.
CURVY: What should the audience take away from the Off the Chain: Kim Coles special?
KC: It’s my journey, just a glimpse into what’s it like to be a stand comic, to live the Hollywood life as a grown woman.
CURVY: What topics do you discuss in the one woman show:
KC: I talk about grown woman things like menopause, really experiencing what its ‘like to been a grown woman in her 40s. I also talk about dating younger men and yes it happens, more often that you can know. I talk about being blessed to be a part of the cast of “Living Single”. It’s simply my Journey all of the adult things that I experience.
CURVY: YOU TALK ABOUT YOUR NATURAL HAIR JOURNEY ON YOUR WEBSITE BLOG AND SPEAK AT NATURAL HAIR CONVENTIONS. WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO DOCUMENT THAT JOURNEY:
KC: I needed to go back to my roots because for a long time, I really hated my hair. I grew up during a time when watching TV meant commercial after commercial and TV shows that had women with hair that blow in the wind. It was usually long and silky and it make me just hate my own hair. Now that I’m an adult, I decided to go natural because I decided and wanted to love my own hair. It takes a lot to cover up my beauty so I help other women to learn their hair to (KimColes.com/hairblog)
You can watch OFF THE CHAIN:KIM COLES THIS THURSDAY November 12, at 10pm est.
CURVY: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE TO THE NEW CROP OF FEMALE COMEDIENNE’S?
KC: I’d tell them to write their own material, study the masters and never give up. You have to just do it. That’s what I’d say I’d say ‘Just do it!’ Step out on faith. It will be scary, very scary but you have to be fearless and learn as you go.
