It takes a lot to be comfortable with who we are. Society has its opinion and we have our own. We all strive to look our best and that also comes from within. We read magazines and watch TV looking to gain the hottest tips and trends in beauty, fashion etc. With that comes a mentality check, that we are all beautiful and all special in our own way. I am known as the true makeup stalker, it’s what I have loved since I was a child. Today I am bringing you someone who I admire as a realist and a cutting edge entrepreneur in the beauty industry. She is bringing the best that beauty has to offer inside and out. As the CEO and founder for, she has created and amazing empire catering to a huge amount of followers. Whether they are participating in makeup challenges on the popular site, or watching her incredible tutorials on her YouTube channel: Her technique and instruction are fabulous and driven to do what she strives to pursue everyday, which is to make everyone “feel pretty”. Here is my one on one with an amazing artist and person. She is genuine, she is intelligent, she is beautiful and she is Marlena, the original Makeupgeek!

CS – What does it mean to be a true MakeupGeek and how did you come up with the name?

Marlena – Being a Makeup Geek means you love everything about makeup- wearing it, shopping for it, reviewing new products…  I came up with the name as I used to always tease my then husband that he “geeked out” on video games or electronics- I just geeked out on makeup instead 🙂

CS -What are your top 3 makeup lines (3 High end and 3budget)

Marlena- Budget: NYX has great blushes and lipglosses, Revlon for foundations and lipsticks, and L’Oreal HIP for eyeliners and eyeshadows

High end: Makeup ForEver for eyeshadows and foundations, Dior or Lancôme for foundations and powders, and NARS for blushes

CS – I am such a hardcore fan of your tutorials and think you are such a fabulous makeup artist. What led you to it?

Marlena – I’ve loved makeup my whole life- even used to practice on my Barbie head doll when I was little 😉  Since I’m a “girly girl”, the idea of wearing makeup has always appealed to me, plus I love the artistic side of it.  I love experimenting with different colors and “painting” my creations on my face. The great thing is if you do not like your art, just wash your face and start over!

CS – I know that you must lead a very busy lifestyle with your businesses, work etc. What are your hobbies, interests, things you do when you have time?

Marlena – I love to scrapbook!  It is another artistic outlet that relieves stress and is fun to do with my mom or a friend.  I also love to play the piano and flute since I miss teaching music!  Traveling is always fun as long as I can have some down time at home 😉

CS – You went through some incredible changes in the past couple of years with weight loss, etc. What advice can share with our Curvy readers about that?

Marlena – First, set REALISTIC goals for yourself:  they have to be realistic!  Ideally, you should only lose 1-2 pounds a week.  Yes, it’s slow and it will take awhile to lose a large amount of weight, but you’ll stick with it more if you’re realistic with yourself.

Then, do 1 step at a time:  start by just giving up sodas for water or by cutting back on sugars.  The key is to just cut 1 thing at a time so it doesn’t feel like you’re depriving yourself. Then don’t tell yourself “I’m giving up _____”, but say “I’m trading candy for fruit salad” or “I’m trading Pepsi for Diet Ice Teas”-  you have to find healthy substitutes for what you eat now that still taste good to you.

It’s all about making YOUR health a priority. All your other plans can wait, your top priority is YOU and your health.  You have to come first.

CS – I am sure that it can be very challenging making yourself so public when you have a YouTube channel, website and are on the internet in general. How do you think that has been for you?

Marlena – There are positives and negatives that come along with that- I truly do love my audience as they are so kind when I meet them in person! Along with that, there will always be those who try to tear you down but when I sit down and read a sweet email from a viewer, it makes me realize that I’m truly blessed to be able to show women how to feel more beautiful in even the smallest way.   Keeping my personal life as private as possible also helps me separate work from home…

How long have you been a YouTube Guru? Was this difficult in the beginning (filming, etc)?

I started making videos in April 2008. Being a teacher, I guess I was well trained on how to teach and explain things, but indeed filming and editing videos was something new!

CS – What are your must have makeup tips, product, etc that you suggest for the upcoming seasons? (Fall/Winter)

Marlena – A berry stain is always sexy for the fall- my favorite are the Palladio ones as well as the Josie Maran.  Another trend is the reverse smoky eye- take a small dome brush and smudge a dark brown eye shadow under the lower lash line, working it downwards.  Leave the eyelids bare or apply a slight champagne shimmer to the lid.  Very hot for this season!

CS – I know that you are of Italian descent with your gorgeous Olive skin, what is your skincare regimen?

Marlena – Rule #1 for gorgeous skin:  ALWAYS remove your makeup at night.  As much as I love makeup, I cannot wait to remove it early in the evening so my face can breathe and be “clean”.  Also be sure to moisturize, even if your skin is oily.  If you strip your skin of natural oils, it over produces oil to compensate, which then causes breakouts.

What are 5 beauty items that you cannot leave home without?

L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara, NYX Mega Shine Lipgloss in “Beige”, Stila Waterproof Eyeliner, Eve Pearl Salmon Concealer (for those undereye bags), and Diorskin Airflash Foundation (pricey but amazing!)

CS – Is there anything you would like to share with our Curvy readers? It can be on life, beauty, body acceptance, etc.

Marlena – No one- absolutely no one is perfect (even Halle Barry and Kim Kardashian).  BUT, everyone has beautiful features that they love! Focus on that and realize that you are beautiful in your unique way.  For me, I’ve always had issues with my chunky legs but I love my eyes, so I wear colorful eyeshadow to emphasize my eyes.  We all have something beautiful and unique to just us.

Also, take time every single day to do something for just you- even if it is just 5 minutes.  Take a walk, enjoy a bubble bath, play with makeup…. You deserve to slow down for just a bit to do something that makes you happy 🙂
