Curvy Magazine: How long have you been in business?
Mallory Musante: I’ve been in business for about a year and a half. I started doing custom designs in May 2009 and I have since expanded into doing my own line of Signature Looks.
CM: What initially instilled your passion for shoes?
MM: For as long as I can remember I’ve always had a passion for shoes. I think it is because my mom has amazing fashion sense and it just rubbed off on me.
My interest in starting my own shoe line was actually sparked by the movie PS I Love You. After seeing that movie, I decided to take a 5-day intensive shoe-making course in San Francisco through the London-based accessory design school Prescott & Mackay. I then met a man that hand paints sneakers at a conference in Chicago. After meeting him, I did a ton of research and found there were very few options for women to have hand painted shoes. Because I’ve always painted and have an obsession with shoes, I decided to combine my passions to create unique shoes for women.
CM: What do you hope to provide for your customers?
MM: I want every woman to be able to have a really unique pair of shoes that expresses their personality and personal style perfectly. I love to have unique items in my wardrobe that are like rare little gems. To me, there is nothing worse than going somewhere and spotting someone wearing the same dress, jewelry, or carrying the same bag.
Every pair of Mallory Musante Shoes is hand painted ensuring that each pair is unique. I also try to make my designs unique so they can’t be found anywhere else but also versatile so women can wear them anywhere from work to a night out.
CM: How involved are you in the process?
MM: I am extremely involved in the process. I am basically a one-woman show right now! I create all the designs and I am the one that hand paints all the shoes. I also handle all the other day-to-day activities that a business owner has to tend to.
CM: Have you found it hard to be a woman in this industry?
MM: I actually haven’t found it difficult to be a woman in this industry. I think it actually gives me a bit of an advantage because I know what women want. I always keep my eyes open and do a lot of research on upcoming trends but I think as a woman designing women’s shoes, I just have that women’s intuition on what will work and what won’t.
