A true woman never reveal her signature beauty and fashion secrets does she? Well for the betterment of my fellow plus size fashionistas I have a secret to share with you, Deb Shops. Yes, I know some of you are well aware of the brand but most are not. I call it my little secret because for years the most fashion forward clothing I could find in my size I found at Deb Shops. The store became my obsession in my early 20s (now 33). I was so excited to find fashion in my size that didn’t have the look of adding 15 years to my age. The added bonus is that I never saw another girl wearing anything I bought from Deb. So when asked,”Where did you get that dress?” I never gave a straight answer. Back then finding any unique fashions in plus sizes was more rare than a Unicorn. Honestly, at that time Deb Shop was fashionably running circles around our leading plus size retailers. Deb stepped out of the box on plus size clothing well before we gained “fat”shion forward designers like Monif C or Qristyl Frazier. But very few in the curvy community was aware of it.
Deb Shop, junior and plus-size apparel, was a retail clothing store way ahead of its time for curvy women. Unfortunately after more than 80 years in business, Deb filed for Chapter 11 protection on December 2, 2014. On January 7 2015, the bankruptcy court awarded Gordon Brothers Group and Hilco Merchant Resources the store closing process for all locations. By May 287 Deb Shops retail locations closed. When I heard the news my first thought was “If only the Curvy Community understood what we just lost”.
Over this Holiday season I received an email from a rep about the new and improved Deb Shops. Their website and physical stores have separated and many of the stores have closed. Now the website offers head-to-toe apparel and accessories at affordable prices too! Nothing on Deb Shops is over $50! From chunky knits to fit and flare dresses, Deb Shops have something for every body. For 2016, they offer all of Springs hottest trends. Whether you need lace, sequins, denim, florals, sporty chic, ruffles, stripes, tie-dye or metallics, they have it! I don’t think it is a word for how excited I am now.
The new Deb Shops is sleek-er, sexier, chic-er, and edgier with adding in sophisticated high slits at the perfect placement. Deb looks all grown up and probably answering to Deborah now.
This post was not paid for. I simply wanted to share my love affair with you and pay homage to one of the CURVY fashion pioneers who never got the credit they deserved. You can shop for your next amazing look on Deb Shops.com
