The first time I heard the song “Crooked Smile” by J. Cole I did not really listen to the words. We sometimes get caught up in the beats so much we forget that songs are but poems with music. I love this part of the song.
“And we can ride with the windows down, the music loud
I can tell you ain’t laughed in a while
But I wanna see that crooked smile”
I have been pretty self-conscious lately about a lot of things. My weight, my career, and just the overall pressure of being a curvaceous woman these days are a hard balance. Taking my body and fitting it into the mold that has been created over time in society is tough.
As I stood in the mirror one day looking at my body from head to toe I realized that the very first thing people often comment on is my beautiful smile. I looked at my smile and was reminded that the Bells Palsy is still not gone. I have a crooked smile, a sexy one, but crooked. Then I went back and played J. Cole’s song again and it left me feeling like crooked smile, big bust, bottom, and thighs is just fine.
J. Cole’s song is now my new anthem in celebrating my crooked smile is beautiful, my crooked smile is me. Thank you J. Cole and we love your crooked smile too!
